Electron Beam Physicist
We usually respond within a month
Gothenburg, Sweden | Full-time | On-site
We are seeking a high-agency applied physicist who gets excited about understanding, predicting, and pushing the limits of electron beam behavior—from the fundamental physics of emission to full system performance in real-world environments. In this role, you will be a key driver in developing our in-house competence for the electron beam system. If you thrive where theory meets hands-on experimentation, and where your ideas directly shape next-generation systems, this role is for you.
About Freemelt
Freemelt is an ambitious deeptech company developing cutting-edge metal additive manufacturing solutions. Our proprietary Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF) technology enables customers to accelerate their development from research and feasibility studies to full-scale industrial production. We aim to become a leading productivity partner in the AM industry by delivering innovative, high-performance solutions for critical and regulated applications. As we expand into new markets and scale our technology, you will join a company shaping the future of industrial 3D printing.
About the role
As a scale-up working with deep and hard tech, we value ingenuity and technical autonomy. We need someone who can deliver high-fidelity results through a combination of deep physics knowledge and creative problem-solving, making our systems robust today while architecting the breakthroughs of tomorrow.
You will contribute to modelling, development and measurement capabilities for electron beam systems. This means building software- and hardware-based tools to improve and quantify beam quality, precision, resolution, and motion. The models will be used to drive further development decisions, production, and customer environments. You will also play a key role in the development of next-generation systems, helping Freemelt to balance extreme performance with practical manufacturability. Day to day, you will work cross-functionally with software, hardware, materials, and service teams.
Who you are
You have a background in applied physics, charged particle modelling, or a closely related field. You enjoy environments where you combine your theoretical depth in emission physics with a clear understanding of how that physics plays out across an entire system. You are equally comfortable deriving equations as installing vacuum sensors or taking measurements by the machine.
You write strong code for simulation, instrument control and data-driven modeling, and you take pride in building tools that work in manufacturing environments, not just in the lab. You are a proactive problem solver who thrives in a collaborative technical team.
Key responsibilities
Develop internal modelling and characterizaton tools for the electron beam system, covering full-range from generation and emission to delivery, metrology, and instrumentation
Work hands-on to build the physical and software-based tools needed to quantify and predict beam quality, precision, resolution, and motion
Bridge Product Development, production, and real customer environments to ensure our beam systems are stable, reliable, and robust in long-term use
Contribute to the design and development of next-generation systems, balancing extreme performance with manufacturability
Collaborate cross-functionally with software, materials, hardware, and service teams, as well as customers, to solve real technical challenges
Required qualifications
Solid experience in electron beam systems, charged particle optics, or related physics.
PhD or MSc in Applied Physics or similar
3–5 years of relevant experience (experience from a manufacturing company is an advantage)
Strong programming skills (Python or similar) for enabling modeling, instrument control, and process automation
Hands-on experience with vacuum systems, high-voltage equipment, and experimental hardware.
The ability to bridge deep theory and practical engineering with a "build it, test it, improve it" mindset
Why Freemelt?
At Freemelt, you will join curious problem solvers and bold innovators who enjoy pushing ideas one step further. We work with passion, pace, and close collaboration — united by a drive to push industrial 3D printing forward. Here, your ideas matter. You will make a real impact on both our technology and our growth as we shape the future of metal additive manufacturing together.
