Location: Gothenburg, Sweden | Employment: Full time | On site
At Freemelt, you will not just design machines, you will help shape an emerging industrial technology. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in developing our next generation of EPBF systems. You will solve complex mechanical challenges and turn them into scalable, production ready solutions. Working closely with world class experts in mechanical, electrical, software, materials, and process engineering, you will help redefine what is possible in high performance metal additive manufacturing.
About Freemelt
Freemelt is an ambitious deep-tech company developing cutting edge metal additive manufacturing solutions. Our proprietary Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (EPBF) technology enables customers to accelerate their development from research and feasibility studies to full-scale industrial production. We aim to become a leading productivity partner in the AM industry by delivering innovative, high-performance solutions for critical and regulated applications. As we expand into new markets and scale our technology, you will join a company shaping the future of industrial 3D printing.
About the role
As a Sr Mechanical Engineer at Freemelt, you will lead the design and development of mechanical systems and components for our advanced Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (EPBF) technology. You will translate complex product requirements into reliable, manufacturable designs, ensuring safety, functionality and quality from concept through production transfer.
Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will develop mechanical solutions ready for production, supporting sectors including defence, energy and medical technology. Your role will be pivotal in prototyping, testing and refining systems that enable Freemelt's scalable, high-performance metal additive manufacturing.
Key responsibilities
Lead the mechanical design of future EPBF machine systems using Creo Parametric, create detailed drawings and assemblies, and manage design data and change processes in Windchill PDM
Translate user and product needs into detailed technical requirements and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards throughout the design process
Perform engineering analyses (calculations, simulations) and structural/thermal validations to support design decisions
Collaborate closely with electrical, software, materials, and process engineers to secure seamless system integration and high overall performance
Support prototyping, physical testing, and design verification to mature concepts to production readiness
Drive and participate in design reviews; conduct risk assessments to ensure safety, reliability, and product quality
Engage with suppliers and manufacturing partners to optimize designs for cost effective and scalable production in metal additive manufacturing
Contribute mechanical expertise and innovative solutions that shape the product roadmap and Freemelt’s next-generation platforms
Required qualifications
Experience working with large, complex assemblies (e.g., mechanical structures, vacuum systems, motion systems, shielding, enclosures, integrated electrical/process hardware)
Proven experience ensuring serviceability, manufacturability, safety, and system compatibility at full machine level
Experience taking mechanical designs from concept through prototyping to production release
Strong analytical ability and track record of cross-functional teamwork in R&D settings
Strong competence in GD&T, functional tolerancing, and tolerance stack-ups for complex multisystem assemblies
BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
5+ years of experience with Creo Parametric (or comparable 3D CAD), including daily use in the last 3 years
Hands on experience with Windchill PDM for CAD data management, version control, configurations, and change processes in R&D or production environments
Proficiency with FEA tools and testing methods for high-heat/high-stress environments
Ability to independently plan and structure design work, estimate tasks and deliver results within agreed timelines
Previous experience from manufacturing industry
Preferred qualifications
Experience designing mechanical systems for vacuum, high-temperature, or high-stress environments
Familiar with DFM/DFA for complex, regulated or safety critical products
Experience in additive manufacturing (metal AM) ecosystems or adjacent industries
Why Freemelt
At Freemelt, you will join curious problem solvers and bold innovators who enjoy pushing ideas one step further. We work with passion, pace, and close collaboration — united by a drive to push industrial 3D printing forward. Here, your ideas matter.
